샌프란시스코에서 개업하고 있는 정신과 의사 아이잭 바아(Isaac Barr: 리차드 기어 분)는 심리불안에 시달리는 젊은 여자환자 다이애나(Diana Baylor: 우마 써먼 분)를 치료하면서, 다이애나의 어린 시절 가정사를 알아보기 위해 그 언니 헤더(Heather Evans: 킴 베신저 분)를 만난다. 아이잭과 헤더는 첫눈에 서로 끌리는 감정을 어쩌지 못한다. 헤더는 불행한 결혼생활을 하고 있는 여인이며, 그 남편이 악한 사내의 전형이어서 다른 남자를 만나기가 매우 위태로운게 사실이지만, 아무튼 아이잭과 사랑을 나누게 된다. 게다가 소량의 알코올에도 일시적으로 심한 정신이상 증세를 보이는 병적 중독증을 갖고 있는 헤더는, 어느날 알코올이 함유된 기침약을 마시고 이상증세를 나타내 남편을 살해하게 된다. 알아주는 법 심리학자이기도 한 아이잭은 친한 변호사와 전문증인을 동원하여, 헤더의 재판에서 무죄판결을 얻어낸다. 그런데 헤더가 법정의 명령에 의해 병적중독증이 치료될 때까지라는 단서로 정신병원에 유치된 뒤, 아이잭이 헤더와 다이애나 자매의 행적에서 수상한 점들을 발견하기 시작하면서 지금까지의 애틋했던 분위기는 극적으로 반전한다.

미국과 멕시코의 국경 지대에 있는 가난한 마을에 매년 칼베라(Calvera: 엘리 월라치 분)란 도적떼가 나타나 수확한 양식을 빼앗아 가자 마침내 마을 사람들은 도적떼와 싸우기로 결심하고 총잡이를 구하러 도시로 온다. 대가도 너무 싸고 싸움에 승산이 없다는 걸 알면서도 그들을 딱하게 여긴 크리스(Chris Adams: 율 브리너 분)라는 총잡이가 다섯 명의 일류 총잡이들을 설득한다. 드디어 여섯 명의 총잡이가 마을로 향해가고 있는데 젊은 청년 치코가 그들을 쫓아오며 자신도 끼워달라고 떼를 쓴다. 결국 그의 끈질김에 감탄하여 그들은 치코를 끼워주기로 한다. 마을에 도착한 7인의 총잡이들은 마을 사람들에게 총 쏘는 법을 훈련시키고 함정을 만들며 칼베라와 싸울 준비 태세를 갖춘다. 처음엔 총잡이들이 무서워 피하기만 하던 마을 사람들도 그들을 믿고 따르게 된다. 드디어 칼베라 일당이 후퇴를 한다. 그러나 칼베라가 완전히 도망간 게 아니고 끝까지 싸울 계획임을 알게 되자 마을 사람들은 지금이라도 항복하자는 패와 끝까지 싸우자는 패로 나뉜다. 결국 항복을 주장하던 마을 사람 하나가 칼베라를 마을에 몰래 끌어들여 7인의 총잡이들을 잡게 한다. 목숨만 구한 채 마을에서 쫓겨난 그들은 죽을 걸 알면서도 마을로 되돌아가 싸우기로 한다. 목숨을 걸고 싸우고 있는 그들의 모습에 마을 사람들도 두려움을 떨치고 합세하여 칼베라 일당을 모조리 죽인다. 그러나 7인의 총잡이 중 셋만이 살아남는다. 그 중 치코는 사랑하는 마을 처녀 옆에 남기로 하고 두 명만이 마을을 떠나 다시 황야로 향한다.

During the Texas War of Independence of 1836 American frontiersman and pioneer Jim Bowie pleads for caution with the rebellious Texicans. They don't heed his advice since he's a Mexican citizen, married to the daughter of the Mexican vice-governor of the province and a friend to General Santa Anna since the days they had fought together for Mexico's independence. After serving as president for 22 years, Santa Anna has become too powerful and arrogant. He rules Mexico with an iron fist and he would not allow Texas to self-govern. Bowie sides with the Texans in their bid for independence and urges a cautious strategy, given Santa Anna's power and cunning. Despite the disagreement between the Texicans and Bowie regarding the right strategy they ask Bowie to lead them in a last-ditch stand, at Alamo, against General Santa Anna's numerically superior forces.
