뉴욕에서 태어난 무슬림 가족의 2세인 '자히드'는 종교와 자유에 대해 혼란을 느낀다. 컴퓨터 그래픽 디자이너로 일하는 자히드는 가업을 잇기를 원하는 아버지와 갈등을 빚는다. 그런 그에게 '아바즈'는 뉴욕에 사는 젊은 무슬림들과 소통할 수 있는 홈페이지를 만드는 일을 의뢰하며 접근한다. 테러 조직의 느낌을 감지한 자히드는 그를 피하지만 그 이후로 자히드는 무차별적인 인종차별과 폭행을 당하게 된다. 미국에 대한 반감이 생겨난 자히드는 무슬림 문화에 마음이 가기 시작한다. 한편, 911 테러 이후 무슬림 테러 조직을 조사하는 CIA 요원 ‘테리’는 자히드 일당을 추적하기 시작한다.
