보수적이지만 자상한 아빠 척(제임스 마스던)과 활동적이고 사교적이지만 철없는 엄마 래니(클레어 데인즈), 그리고 그들과 친구처럼 지내며 자란 16세 말괄량이 소녀 루시(사라 볼거). 여느 가족처럼 부모님과 함께 사는 평범하고 화목한 가정을 꿈꾸는 루시는 어느 순간부터 부모님의 관계가 소원해졌다고 느끼고, 일 년에 몇 달씩 캐나다에서 일하는 아빠와 집안을 책임지고 있는 엄마 사이에서 자신의 정체성과 미래를 고민하기 시작한다.

It’s for anyone who has ever been to the DMV, changed checkout lines in a supermarket, or tried to navigate an automated telephone menu. It's the absurd chaos that develops in our minds as fantasy, but for Mr. Smith, it's all too real.
