몇년 후의 미래. V8 엔진이 달린 경찰 특수차량을 훔쳐 도주하는 폭주족 나이트라이더를 추격하는 경찰 대원 맥스는 맹추격 끝에 그를 잡지만, 나이트라이더는 사고로 사망해버리고 만다. 그가 속한 갱단의 두목 토커터는 경찰들에게 복수할 것을 다짐한다.
맥스는 일에 치이느라 가족들과 함께 시간을 보내지 못하는 점에 미안해하고 있었다. 그는 부상에서 회복한 동료 구스와 순찰에 나선다. 한 편 토커터와 갱단은 나이트라이더의 시신이 운반된 기차역에서 난동을 부리고, 한 발 늦게 도착한 맥스 일행은 그의 죄를 입증하지 못해 풀어주고 만다.
얼마 후 구스는 토커터 일당에게 습격당해 목숨만 겨우 붙은 신세가 되고, 맥스는 이에 회의감이 들어 사표를 제출하나, 피피 과장은 사표를 반려하고, 맥스에게 여행을 다녀 오라며, 특별 휴가를 준다. 그러나 이를 전해들은 토커터가 맥스와 가족들을 추격하는데...
