대기업에서 회계를 맡고 있는 프랑수아 피뇽은 해고될 위기에 처한 답답한 샐러리맨. 이 사실은 알게 된 프랑수아는 친구의 충고대로 동성애자처럼 행동하기 시작한다. 그러나 그를 보는 사람들의 시선은 오히려 호기심으로 가득 차고 갑자기 요주의 인물로 부상한다. 경영진 또한 동성애자를 차별한다는 이미지를 심어주면 안 된다는 정치적인 이유 때문에 그를 해고하지 못한다. 변한 것이라곤 타인의 시선 뿐, 정작 자신의 행동에는 아무런 변화가 없는데 갑자기 주변 사람들로부터 소외당하는 이야기.

피에르와 그의 친구들은 매주 수요일마다 자신이 알고 있는 바보를 데려와 그 중에 가장 바보같은 사 람을 데려온 사람이 이기는 내기를 해오고 있었다. 여느 때와 같은 수요일 저녁, 피에르는 성냥개비 조 립을 취미를 가지고 있고, 회계일을 하고 있는 프랑 수와를 저녁 식사에 초대한다. 피에르는 프랑수와 가 세상에서 제일 바보같다고 생각하며 저녁 식사 내기에서 이길거라고 신나하지만, 골프를 치다가 허리를 삐끗하여 저녁식사에 갈 수 없는 지경이 된다. 이미 초대를 받은 프랑스와는 피에르의 집으로 찾아오고, 그 사이 피에르에 열받은 그의 아내가 가출한다. 프랑스와와 피에르가 그의 아내의 행방을 찾 으면서 벌어지는 이야기다.

What there is of a plot in this drama serves mainly as a vehicle for the exploration of character. In the story, Michel (Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu) is a recent widower. As the story opens, he and his friend Andre (Philippe Nahon) are sharing a drink on Christmas Eve. He takes a yellow scarf from a woman he knows (Laura Morante) and teasingly refuses to return it. Throughout the remainder of the film, the scarf reappears, as does the woman, until they wind up in bed together at the end of the film. Before that happens, Michel wanders around Paris, viewing the festivities with a jaundiced eye which serves to heighten the unattractiveness of those he observes. Later he has dinner with a group at Andre's house, and his poor opinion of human nature is amply supported by the events that occur then.

The film starts in the 13th arrondissement of Paris in 1984. Robert Pinot is a police officer as ordinary as clumsy. One day, he stops a certain Josyane, a young drug addict who is also doubled as a pickpocket, nicknamed Marylou. Having discovered that she comes from the same village, Nanteuil, then him, he takes compassion for the young girl and decides to take her under his wing to keep her away from Tony, a dangerous dealer with whom she is in love.

It is 1943 in Paris. Like so many others, the Bourbelle family's home has been taken over by the Germans and they now live in their cellar. Little do they know that the son, Guy-Hubert Bourdelle, is far from being the cowardly hairdresser he pretends. He is in truth the Germans’ most feared opponent: le super-résistant!
