중일전쟁과 제2차세계대전으로 세상이 요동을 치던 시절, 인간의 충성심과 인내심을 재는 듯한 사건이 잇따라 발생했다. 루는 무자비한 중국인 폭도의 두목이었다가 일본제국군인들이 그에게 협력을 요청해 왔기 때문에 패거리들에게 의심을 받게 되었다. 그의 매제인 와타나베는 "상하이인"을 자칭하는 일본인이지만, 실제로는 비밀리에 일본제국을 위해 일하는 인물이다. 난잡한 사생활을 보내는 여배우 샤오리우는 루에게는 조직 보스의 부인이다. 샤오리우는 공연자와 잔 후 남편에 의해 상하이 밖으로 내쫓았다. 하지만 루의 명을 받고 일하던 와타나베가 샤오리우를 강간하고 그녀는 그 후 몇년 동안 성노예로 몰아넣게 되었다. 1945년 일본이 패배한 후, 루는 샤오리우가 상하이에서 호스피스에 머물고 있다고 알게 되었다. 그들은 와타나베와 함께 끝내지 못했던 일이 있다고 생각하고 그의 행방을 찾기로 결심했다.

Guangxi province, southern China, 4 Apr 2011. On the day of the Qingming (grave-sweeping) festival, 27-year-old Yang Jie (Huo Siyan) visits the orphanage in which she was raised after receiving a letter from its head (Li Zhu). When she arrives, however, the head denies she ever wrote to her. Along with the letter was a train ticket from Xijiang to Qingming that same evening and, after receiving some childhood mementos from the orphanage head, Yang Jie goes to catch the train. Tired from repeated nightmares and sedatives, she falls asleep in the waiting room and has a ghostly dream involving a child’s voice; waking up she finds someone has stolen a wig from her.

Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China, the present day. Master chef Tang Shizhe (Kenneth Tsang) tells his two daughters, the careerist Wa'er (Huo Siyan) and teenage Xiaolan (Jiang Mengjie), that he has decided to sell his upscale vegetarian restaurant, the centre of his life for 30 years.

Ziyi has been haunted by the same dream for years: In the dream, she would stand alone on a wasteland, knowing that something is buried underneath. Ekin Cheng plays Autumn Yip, a triad mobster who gets caught in Thailand and does 8 years in prison before being released. He visits "The Doctor" and asks for a loan before returning to Hong Kong where he is eagerly awaited by his old triad business partners as well as the Hong Kong police who have set up a special 'anti-Triad' unit just to keep tabs on Yip. The movie shows the confusion shown by the mob and the police over Yip's sudden philanthropy as he makes headline after headline for doing good deeds, not bad. This does not sit well with his old triad boss Brother Hung (Ti Lung) nor Hung's son, Gwai Chai (Stephen Fung). Gwai Chai in particular is itching to rise the ranks of the mob and take over and sets up deals on his own which increasingly puts pressure on himself to deliver. The mob's success hinges on Yip's connections to Thailand and Gwai Chai takes matters to the extreme in order to force his deal to be a success...

Fai, a talented actor who has won the Best New Artist of the Hong Kong Film Awards and always plays leading roles in television, is an arrogant guy who does not cherish the opportunities given to him.
