아버지의 묘지에서 베리(Barry McMullen: 에드워드 번스 분)는 가족을 떠나야 한다는 어머니의 마지막 말을 듣게 된다. 그 말이란 다름아니라 35년간 자신을 기다려준 사랑하는 남자를 만나러 간다는 것. 이 한마디를 남기고 어머니는 베리에게 자신의 심정을 형제들에게 전해 줄 것과 두 형제들을 잘 보살펴줄 것을 부탁하고 떠난다. 그로부터 5년 후, 진실한 사랑과 결혼 문제를 앞두고 이들 삼형제는 모처럼 집에 모이게 되고 자신의 여자 친구와 다툰 일들 화해한 일들을 얘기하며 시간가는 줄 모르게 된다. 사귀는 여자는 결혼하여 안정적인 생활을 하고 싶다고 하지만 이를 계속 뿌리치며 자유롭게 살기를 원하는 패트릭(Patrick McMullen: 마이클 맥글론 분). 임신을 원하는 아내를 두고 아내의 친구와 밀회를 나누는 잭(Jack McMullen: 잭 멀케이 분)은 그 사실이 아내에게 밝혀지고 난 후 겪게 된 난처함에 대해 이야기 한다. 한편 베리는 우연히 길에서 재회한 남의 약혼녀와 사랑에 빠져버리고 자책감에 휩싸여 자신의 마음과는 달리 그녀에게 돌아가라고 말해버리는데.
