Zbyszek Butryn returns to Poland from exile to help win the Solidarity elections. His children, staying in orphanages, who intend to find him, learn about his father's return.

Izabella, a beautiful young woman, works at her aunt’s shop in a small town in Poland. She uses her hands to create unique small objects for the shop, but in the night she has the strange habit to feed bats.

After Poland won freedom from of its long overlordship by Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, it took a further four years for its National Assembly to elect Gabriel Narutowicz as its first president. Narutowicz was a professor who until his election had been living in Switzerland. Those were chaotic times, and shortly after his election, he was assassinated by right-wing fanatics. This epic Polish film chronicles the circumstances of Narutowicz's election and assassination.

(한국시네마테크협의회) 1970년, 대규모의 화학공장을 건설할 장소를 결정 하기 위해 난상토론과 밀실에서의 타협이 이루어지고 장소가 결정된다. 고지식한 당원인 베드나츠가 이 건설의 책임을 맡게 되면서, 좋지 않은 기억으로 남아있는 옛 고향을 다시 찾게 된다. 베드나츠는 옛 고향을 사람들이 평화롭게 어울려 사는 곳으로 만들고 싶어하지만 그의 신념은 마을 사람들의 탐욕스러운 욕구와 충돌하고 결국 포기하게 된다. 기록영화작업을 꾸준히 하던 키에슬로프스키의 첫 장편영화로 좌파 세력의 위선적인 모습을 대단히 미묘하지만 효과적으로 보여준 작품. 키에슬로프스키 감독은 이 영화로 모스크바영화제 대상을 수상하며 `도덕적 불안의 영화` 세대의 지도자로 국내외에서 확실한 주목을 받았다.
