18세기 미대륙에서 벌어지는 영국과 프랑스의 식민지 전쟁을 배경으로 모히칸족에 의해 길러진 백인 호크아이와 영국인 장교의 딸 코아 사이의 사랑과 모험이 펼쳐진다. 모히칸족 추장에 의해 길러진 백인 청년 호크아이는 영토를 두고 영국과 프랑스 사이의 전쟁이 벌어지자, 추장의 아들 웅카스와 모히칸족을 지키기 위해 전투에 나선다. 당시 영국과 프랑스는 영토전쟁을 벌였고, 희생양은 인디언들이었다.
