50대을 목전에 둔 피바디는 보스톤의 평범한 가장이다. 휴양차 찾아간 한 섬에서 그는 뜻밖에도 아름다운 인어 한 마리를 낚게 되는데, 인생의 황혼기에 접어든 그의 공허한 마음을 틈타서, 아름답고 천진한 인어에 대한 사랑이 싹튼다. 인어 르노어를 집안 욕조에 들여 놓으면서부터 아내 플리의 오해가 시작되고 급기야는 아내의 가출로까지 이어진다. 이미 인어에게 마음을 빼앗긴 피바디는 르노어를 데리고 무인도에서 살 계획으로 떠난다. 그러나 그는 실종된 플리를 추적하던 경찰에 발견되고 르노어는 바닷속으로 사라진다. 배에 실려가던 피바디는 르노어의 노랫소리에 바닷속으로 뛰어들고 결국 친구에 의해 구조된다. 결국 인어와의 만남은 환상적인 꿈을 꾼 것처럼 되고 아내와 화해한 피바디는 예전보다 더 아내와 친해지게 된다.
