농기구 회사의 영업사원인 버드(George Bird: 알렉 기네스 분)는 불치병 진단을 받는다. 의사는 외로운 그에게 주변을 정리하고, 여행을 다니면서 남은 인생을 보내라고 충고한다. 버드는 직장을 그만두고 그 동안 모아둔 돈을 찾아 유명 인사들이 출입하는 고급 호텔에 투숙한다. 사회적으로 상류층에 속하는 투숙객들은 돈도 많고 생활에 여유도 있지만 가식적이고 이중적인 모습을 보인다. 한편 순수하고 다정다감한 버드에게 투숙객 및 종업원들 모두 호감을 갖게되고, 버드는 호텔에 묵고 있는 발명가로부터 사업적인 제의를 받는다든가 정치가 등으로부터 여러 가지 제안을 받는다. 일상적인 욕심을 벗어나 인생을 정리하는 그에게는 행운도 따라주어 경마, 카드 등으로 돈을 벌게 되고 그 돈으로 어려움에 처한 주변 사람들에게 도움을 준다. 그리고 호텔 객실 관리원인 풀 부인(Mrs. Poole: 케이 월쉬 분)과의 애정도 싹튼다. 하지만 인생에서 처음 느껴보는 이런 행복도 죽음을 앞둔 버드에게는 진정한 행복으로 느껴지지 않는데...

이혼 전문 변호사 에버라드 로건(Everard Logan: 로렌스 올리비에 분)은 안개로 인하여 로얄 파크 호텔에 투숙하게 된다. 한편 그 호텔에서 열린 파티에 참석한 레슬리 스틸(Leslie Steele: 멀 오베론 분) 또한 안개로 인하여 집으로 돌아가지 못하고 호텔에서 머무르게 된다. 하지만 방은 이미 다 찼고 호텔 경영진은 파티 참석자들을 위해 투숙자들에게 방을 같이 쓰도록 부탁한다. 깐깐한 로건은 이를 응하지 않지만 레슬리는 그의 방으로 살금살금 들어가 그의 침대까지 차지한다. 침대에서 쫓겨난 로건은 거실에서 새우잠을 자게 되고 주객이 전도된 이 상황에 당황해 하지만 싫어 하는 기색은 보이지 않는다. 그건 바로 그녀에게서 사랑을 느끼게 된 것이다. 아침 식사를 하고 레슬리는 "잘 있어요, 레이디 X로부터"라는 메모만 남긴 채 떠나 버리고 로건은 그녀를 다시 만날 수 있길 바란다. 한편 로건을 찾은 미어 경은 자신의 부인이 어제 다른 남자와 로얄 파크 호텔에 투숙했다는 이유로 이혼을 하려 한다. 자초지정을 들은 로건은 미어 경의 부인이 어젯밤에 자기와 함께 있었던 레슬리라고 오해하게 된다. 하지만 미어 경이 이혼 할거라는 얘기에 다시 안도의 한숨을 내쉰다. 다시 만나게 된 레슬리와 로건. 레슬리는 로건이 자신을 미어 경의 부인으로 오해하고 있다는 걸 알게 되고 진짜 미어 경의 부인인 것처럼 행동하면서 로건을 당황스럽게 한다. 그러던 어느 날 진짜 미어 경의 부인이 로건의 사무실을 찾게 되고 레슬리와 미어 경 부인은 그곳에서 마주치게 되는데...
