마을 입구 빌보드의 홍보문구에 따르면, 미국 서부 소도시 거터비는 ‘서부 카바레의 수도’다. 아쉽게도, 도시의 광경은 문구와는 정반대의 모습이다. 문명의 수혜를 전혀 받지 못한 채, B급 서부극 세트장같이 을씨년스럽기만 한 거터비에 이제 막 출소한 마크가 돌아온다. 마을로 이사온 독일인 에드워드의 소세지 레스토랑 사업에 같이 뛰어들지만, 마을 카바레의 유일한 엔터테이너이자 지독한 인종차별자인 지미의 방해공작에 시달리게 된다.
