Heartless parents C.L. Doyle and his wife take two of their older children, Rosebud & Joseph T. Doyle, on a family vacation to Alaska, but dump their younger ones, Freddy & Margaret Jean, in a Los Angeles foster home. Infuriated by this, Rosebud talks Joseph T. into running away with her so that they can break their younger siblings out of the system, which sparks a manhunt, and an outburst of sympathy among kids everywhere.

대공황으로 돈도 일자리도 안식처도 갖지 못한 미국의 젊은이들은 지친 삶의 돌파구를 찾아 마라톤 댄스 경연 대회를 찾는다. 당시 선풍적인 인기를 모았던 이 대회는 쉬지 않고 춤을 추는 대회인데 끝까지 버티는 사람에게 1,500달러의 상금과 그밖의 공황으로 얻기 힘든 모든 것들을 부상으로 주는 대회였다. 그래서 이 대회에서 승리하는 것은 바로 공황의 그늘에서 벗어나 새로운 삶을 꾸릴수 있는 지름길이었다. 하지만 몸에 장애나 질병, 의심받을 만한 나쁜 처신을 한 사람에게는 출전의 기회가 철저하게 봉쇄되어 있기도 하다. 대회의 프로모터인 록키(긱 영)는 비열한 사나이로 돈을 위해선 무슨 짓이든 할 그런 사람이었고, 댄스 대회 표를 많이 팔기 위해 가능한한 모든 수단을 동원한다. 춤으로 몸을 혹사시키는 대회였던 만큼 의사나 의료진이 경기장에 항상 대기하고 있었고, 사람들은 그런 점에 매력을 느껴 댄스 대회를 찾는 것이기도 했다. 로버트(마이클 사라진)와 글로리아(제인 폰다)는 처음부터 한 팀은 아니었지만 대회가 시작되자 서로의 춤 실력을 발견하고 충동적으로 커플을 이루어 대회에 참가하는데..
