월남전 와중인 68년 워싱턴 근방의 포트마이어 주둔 제3보병 연대 의장대에 재키 윌로우 병장(D.B. 스위니 분)이 전입온다. 이 부대의 고참인 클렐 상사(제임스 칸 분)와 특무상사 구디(제임스 얼 존스 분)는 친구 사이로 재키가 한국전 전우의 아들임을 알고 잘 돌본다. 재키는 클렐에게 반해 사관후보학교를 졸업한 후 소위 임관과 동시에 월남 전쟁터로 떠난다. 소꼽 친구 레이첼(매리 스튜어트 매스터슨 분)과 결혼한 직후였다. 귀국 3주를 남겨두고 재키는 전사하고 알링턴 국립묘지에 묻힌다. 군인은 모름지기 전장에 있어야 한다고 재키를 부추겼던 클렐은 미국은 전사자를 극진히 장례 지내는 걸로 할 일 다한 걸로 자부할 게 아니라 전사자에 대한 바른 평가를 해줘야 한다며 오열한다.

As the murders progress, each one is accompanied by a nursery rhyme. It is up to Philo Vance to unravel the clues and unmask the identity of the murderer 'Bishop'.
