"오버로드" 작전이란 노르망디 상륙작전을 포함하여 궁극적으로 프랑스 전역을 탈환하기 위한 작전이다. 이 영화는 노르망디 상륙작전에 투입된 영국군 병사 이야기이다. 오버로드(Overlord)는 젊은 병사가 군에 입대할 때부터 D-Day 상륙작전인 오버로드 작전에 참여했을 때까지의 경험을 따라간다. 흑백으로 아름답게 촬영된 이 영화는 기록영상을 이야기의 원단에 매끄럽게 짜넣고, 외형뿐만 아니라 그 시대의 본질까지도 포착한다. 마지막 순간까지 주인공은 어떤 싸움에도 관여하지 않는다. 우리가 보는 것은 훈련 받고 전투에 들어가기를 기다리는 젊은 병사의 삶의 미미한 모습이다. 행군 및 군사 훈련, 그가 첫 여자친구를 만나는 영화관 및 지역 마을 무도회; 그가 집에 마지막 편지를 쓰고…… 영화에 나오는 병사들은 전쟁을 혐오하며 싸우기 싫어한다. "조국의 부름"에 의무로 응하긴 했으나, 군인 노릇도 싫고 죽기는 더 싫다. 왜 싸워야 하는지, 왜 목숨을 걸어야 하는지도 분명치 않다. 훈련은 받았지만 작전에 임해서는 두렵기만 한 존재이다. 기존의 많은 이차대전 영화와는 분위기가 많이 다르다. 그 쓸쓸하고 허무한 느낌이 영화의 백미이다. 아름다운 흑백화면이 매우 처연합니다. 자료화면과 실제 영화 화면을 적절하게 섞어서 이질감이 전혀 느껴지지 않는다.
