지미는 유능한 비행기 정비 반장으로 아름다운 아내 케이와 사랑이 돈독하고 열심히 사는 행복한 부부이다. 그러나 어느날 마약 단속반의 과격하고 승진에 눈이 먼 형사 파넬과 스켈리즈가 주소를 착각, 지미의 집을 마약 거래범의 집으로 착각하여 침입한다. 마침 지미가 샤워를 끝내고 드라이어를 들고 나오는 것을 보고 총으로 오인 총격전이 벌어진다. 자신들의 실수를 안 두 사람은 책임을 회피하기 위해 증거를 날조, 지미를 마약 사범으로 몰아 체포한다. 별안간 날벼락을 맞은 지미는 법 없이도 사는 선량한 시민이나 자신이 살기위해 남을 죽여야 하는 살벌한 형무소에서 흑인 일당에게 온갖 수모를 당하는데, 이때 아는 것 많고 수완이 뛰어난 버즐의 도움으로 자신이 살아 남기 위해서는 없애야한다는 법칙을 듣고 그의 도움을 얻어 징글스를 죽인다. 한편 버즐 또한 지미를 감옥에 보낸 두 형사에게 잡혀 들어온 인물로 두 형사가 품행이 좋지않고 마약을 빼돌린다는 사실을 알고 있다. 3년 뒤 집행유예로 풀려난 지미에게 이 두 형사가 찾아와 또다시 못 살게 굴자 지미는 복수를 결심하고 버즐이 짜준 치밀한 계획하에 두 형사를 감시한다. 지미는 감옥에서 알게된 버즐의 동료의 도움으로 두 형사에게 거짓 제보를 하여 두 사람이 빼돌린 마약을 손에 넣는다. 그리고 두 형사를 감시하여 두 사람의 증거만을 확보하려고 노리고 있는 형사 징계위원 제랄드의 도움을 받아 파넬과 스켈리즈를 함정에 빠뜨린다. 이 과정에서 한 명은 사망하고 또 한 명은 버즐이 노리고 있는 살벌한 감옥으로 수감된다.
