플레처 리드(Fletcher Reede: 짐 캐리 분)는 소송에 이기기 위해서는 모든 수단과 방법을 가리지 않는 악질 변호사이다. 그의 거짓말은 타의 추종을 불허할 정도로 능수능란해서 그의 처와 하나밖에 없는 아들 맥스(Max: 저스틴 쿠퍼 분)에게도 이미 신용을 잃은 상태이다. 가족과의 약속을 항상 지키지 못하고 변명만 하던 어느날, 아들 맥스의 생일때는 꼭 참석하겠다고 굳게 약속한다. 맥스는 기대에 부풀어 친구들과 생일파티를 준비해놓고 기다리지만 아빠는 끝내 나타나지 않는다. 실망한 맥스는 아빠가 원망스러워 생일 소원을 빌면서 아빠가 하루만이라도 거짓말을 하지 말아달라고 기도한다. 그런데, 신기하게도 맥스의 소원은 이루어진다. 다음날부터 플레처는 거짓말을 하려고 하지만 자신의 의지와는 상관없이 계속 정직한 말만 튀어나오게 되자 상당한 곤욕을 치룬다. 엘리베이터에서, 사무실에서, 거리에서 심지어는 법정에서 거짓말을 못하게되자 그의 생활은 엉망진창이 되어버린다. 나중에 아들이 그런 소원을 빌었다는 말을 들은 플레처는 맥스에게 그 소원을 취소하고 다른 소원을 빌어달라고 부탁하지만 그의 바램은 이루어지지 않았다. 하지만 법정에서 진심으로 아이들을 사랑하는 상대편 의뢰인을 보고 아들을 사랑하는 마음이 되살아난다. 한편 자신의 전처 오드리(Audrey: 모라 티어네이 분)는 다른 남자를 만나 아들 맥스와 함께 보스톤으로 떠나려 한다. 보스톤행 비행기의 출발 시간은 다가오고 플레처는 소송 때문에 애를 태워야만 했다. 가까스로 소송을 끝내고 보스톤으로 배웅해주겠다는 아들과의 약속을 지키기 위해 공항으로 달려간다.

Mostly everybody hates Brett as Brett knows all the station workers secrets. He has also written a memo insulting all of the main station players - Vic St. John - the station manager, Twyla Cooper - the producer, Chuck Gilmore - the sports reporter, Gary Slate - the weatherman, Cassie Woodfield - the reporter and Gillian Pope. Brett is shot dead with Gillian's gun and therefore is arrested for the crime. Gillian calls in Perry, Della and Ken to investigate. As Della and Perry set out to solve the mystery, Ken gets close to Cassie but she is a suspect and when it appears that somebody is trying to kill her, the mystery deepens..
