In this documentary five severely wounded Iraq/Afghanistan veterans work with professional comedy writers and A-List comedians Lewis Black, Zach Galifianakis, BJ Novak, and Bob Saget to explore their personal experiences through the healing power of humor. Writing their own stand-up comedy routines they find new perspectives from which to view their injuries and their lives - all of which culminates in a performance at two of LA's top comedy clubs.

Through unprecedented backstage access and candid interviews, the film weaves through the absurd world of the working comedian and reveals a crazy and hilarious psychological profile of its practitioners. We also follow retired comic Ritch Shydner's attempt to climb back on stage after a thirteen-year hiatus. At the top of his game in the 1980's, Shydner had HBO specials, shot five pilot TV shows, and numerous late night appearances (Carson, Letterman, Leno, etc.) but the big time eluded him. Equipped with the collective wisdom and nutty musings of over 80 of his peers, he gives it another shot. Does Ritch have what it takes to connect with today's young crowds and still get the laughs?

"우린 친구가 될 수 없겠네요." 대학 졸업 후 뉴욕행을 함께 하게 된 해리와 샐리. ‘남자와 여자는 친구가 될 수 없다’는 명제로 두 사람은 설전을 벌이고, 성격도 취향도 정반대인 서로를 별종이라 생각한다. 뉴욕에 도착한 두 사람은 짧은 인사를 나누고 곧바로 헤어진다. "너랑 연애 안 하길 천만다행이야." 몇 년 뒤, 우연히 서점에서 재회한 두 사람. 샐리는 연인과 이별했고 해리는 아내에게 이혼을 통보 받았다. 두 사람은 이별에 대해 이야기하며 급속도로 가까워지고 비로소 둘도 없는 친구가 된다. "조금만 더 안아줘." 어느 날 샐리는 헤어진 연인의 결혼 소식을 듣게 되고 뒤늦은 이별의 아픔에 슬퍼한다. 해리는 그런 그녀를 말없이 안아주고 위로의 키스는 뜻밖의 하룻밤으로 이어지는데… 다음 날 아침, 우린 친구일까, 연인일까?

시세로군 주립 정신 감호 시설의 번스(John Burns: 댄 애크로이드 분)는 담당 의사 베어드(Lawrence Baird: 데이빗 클레넌 분)에게 장난치는 데 천부적인 소질을 발휘한다. 약이 오를대로 오른 베어드는 번스를 강도 높은 정신병원의 모르모트로 제공하려 하는데, 이때 마침 번스에게 좋은 기회가 다가온다. 비버리 힐스의 저명한 정신과 의사 매이틀린(George Maitlin: 찰스 그로딘 분)이 심한 우울증에 빠져 잠시 모든 일을 쉬고 여행을 즐기는 동안 그를 대신할 사람을 구하다가 베어드에게 연락을 취한 것. 물론 베어드 대신 그 연락을 받은 번스는 그날 밤으로 병원으로부터 탈출을 감행한다. LA에 온 번스는 매이틀린의 변호사 마이클(Harvey Michaels: 리차드 로마너스 분)과 롤린스(Laura Rollins: 도나 딕슨 분) 박사의 융숭한 대접을 받게 된다.매이틀린을 대신하여 라디오 상담 프로그램을 진행하던 번스는 상담자들이 감히 입 밖으로 내어놓지 못하고 고민하는 이야기를 과감하게 건드림으로써 일약 스타로 떠오르는데...
