98년 라디오 헤드의 투어를 담은 음악다큐로 이름을 알린 그랜트 지 감독이 이번에는 조이 디비전의 음악을 담아냈다. 단조롭고 건조한 멜로디와 시니컬하고 염세적인 가사, 몽환적인 효과음이 어우러진 음악으로 사랑받았던 영국 출신 록밴드 조이 디비전은 1980년 보컬 이안 커티스가 23세에 자살하며 단 두 장의 음반을 내고 사라지게 된다. 살아있는 멤버들의 인터뷰와 과거 영상은 감각적인 영상 편집으로 오버랩되고, 무엇보다도 풍부한 공연 실황과 음악이 영화를 가득 채운다. 조이 디비전은 2차 세계대전을 배경으로 한 소설『인형의 집』에 등장하는 단어로 매춘 장소를 뜻하는 속어지만, 음악팬들에 게는 맨체스터 신을 널리 알린 고딕 록 그룹으로 더 잘 알려져 있다. 그런가하면 영화 팬들에게는 의 사운드트랙으로, 또 스물넷의 나이로 요절한 보컬 이언 커티스의 삶을 다룬 영화 로도 알려져 있다. 그룹 조이 디비전은 1977년 결성되어 이언 커티스가 세상을 떠난 1980년까지 단 두 장의 음반만을 내놓았지만, 그들이 음악계에 남긴 파문은 아직까지도 길게 드리워져 있다. 그랜트 지 감독은 다큐멘터리 을 통해 비록 짧았지만 너무나 강렬했던 이들의 궤적을 돌아보고 있다. 이들의 근거지였던 맨체스터의 공연장 일렉트릭 서커스와 음반을 만들었던 팩토리 레코드, 그리고 TV에 출연했을 때와 공연 기록 영상들이 이제는 뉴 오더라는 그룹으로 활동하고 있는 살아남은 세 멤버들의 생생한 회상과 함께 펼쳐진다. 은행에서 돈을 빌려 첫 음반을 녹음한 일부터 충격적이었던 이언 커티스의 자살에 이르기까지 짧았지만 굵게 활동했던 조이 디비전의 전설을 만나게 된다. 특히 커트 코베인이“세상에서 가장 암울한 러브송”이라고 했던 명곡‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’가 흐르는 장면에서는 짙은 감동에 휩싸이게 된다.
