수백만불의 돈이 걸려 있는 재판에 증거서류를 제출 하기 위해 급히 출두 하고 있던 젊고 유망한 변호사 게빈 배넥 (벤 애플렉 분)은 알코올 중독자인 보험 외판원 도일 깁슨 (사무엘 L. 잭슨 분) 과 접촉사고가 난다. 스스로가 인생의 패배자라고 생각 하며 술에 의지하며 살고 있던 도일 깁슨은 이제 마지막 희망인 아이들의 양육권을 위해서 법원으로 가고 있던 길이었다. 아름다운 부인과 결혼하여 살고 있으며 메르세데스 벤츠를 타고 있는 젊고 유능한 변호사 배넥과 그와는 상대적으로 부인에게 이혼당했고, 술 주정뱅이인 깁슨의 접촉 사고는 체인징 레인스 (직역: 차선 변경)의 모티브가 되는 사고이며 두 사회계층 간의 충돌이다. 이유는 다르지만 법원에 가기 위해 너무나도 시간이 급한 이 둘의 사고로 도일 깁슨은 게빈 배넥의 무성의한 사고 처리로 제 시간에 법정에 출두 하지 못하게 되고, 마지막 희망인 아이들의 양육권 마저도 빼앗기게 된다. 하지만 잘못된 차선 변경으로 야기된 사고는 도일 깁슨의 희망만 빼앗아 간 것은 아니다. 게빈은 인생의 전환점이 될 수 있는 재판의 증거 제출 서류를 분실 한 것이다. 그리고 그 분실된 서류는 도일 깁슨이 사고 현장에서 습득 하게 된다. 결국 게빈 배넥에 의해 마지막 희망을 빼앗긴 도일 깁슨은 배넥의 인생을 단 한 순간에 망쳐 버릴 수도 있는 서류를 손에 넣게 된 것이다. 그 증거서류가 없으면 게빈 배넥은 횡령죄로 고소 당할 처지이며, 자신이 출세하기 위해 애써온 모든 노력이 하루아침에 물거품이 되고 마는 것이다. 이제 이 둘은 한번의 잘못된 차선 변경으로 인해 만들어진 악연을 풀어나가야 할 숙제가 주어지는데…..

All's quiet in the small Vermont town of Hazelville as Memorial Day approaches until a string of mysterious deaths begin plaguing forest ranger Mark Cody. As hikers and campers turn up dead, Cody struggles to figure out what's behind the murders while the Mayor looks to keep the deaths hush-hush, afraid it will affect tourism on the town's biggest money-making day of the year. Botanist Max Cooper arrives and determines them to have been victims of the dreaded "Great White Pine." After the Mayor refuses to close the woods and tragedy ensues on Memorial Day, Cody hires grizzled lumberjack Squint to hunt down and kill the voracious tree leading to Cody, Cooper, and Squint venturing out into the woods in Squint's old beat-up pick-up truck for a final showdown with the monster tree.
