해군에서 제대한 교사 대디어는 도시의 어느 고등학교에 교사로 취임하는데, 첫 날 부터 뒤돌아서서 칠판에 글을 쓰는 그에게 야구공을 던지는 등 불량 학생들의 도전이 시작된다. 불량 학생들의 리더는 바로 웨스트라는 학생, 그는 교사들에게 적개심을 품고 있는 위험한 학생 이다. 대디어의 동료 교사들도 이런 학생들에게 거의 속수무책으로 당하고 있다. 대디어는 키가 크고 리더 기질이 있지만 역시 반항심이 있는 흑인 학생 밀러를 불러서 자신에게 협력해 줄 것을 요구한다. 밀러는 이러한 대디어를 처음에는 무시하지만, 차츰 그의 진실을 느끼게 된다. 그런 와중에 앤에게까지 음모를 꾸미는 불량학생 웨스트와 대디어의 관계는 일촉즉발의 위기까지 진행되고... 뉴욕 중심가의 한 학교를 개혁하려는 선생님의 눈물겨운 노력을 일대기적으로 그린 영화.
