Set during the Allied invasion of the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater during WWII, this film is based on the novel by James Jones. Keir Dullea is Private Doll, who dreads the invasion and steals a pistol to help him protect himself. Sergeant Welsh (Jack Warden), a caustic, battle-scarred veteran, hates Doll, whom he considers a coward. In battle, Doll kills a Japanese soldier and is filled with remorse, which further angers the sergeant. The next day, an emboldened Doll wipes out an entire enemy machine gun post and begins to feel as sadistic as Welsh. The two must work together to clear away some mines, but as they do, their platoon is surprised by a Japanese raid.

Sheriff Plummer and his men are using their badges to easily rob gold shipments and kill the drivers. Marshal McDowell and his men are looking for the killers. 소년원 1년, 절도 1년, 호객 및 윤락 행위 3년에 위증죄까지 겹쳐 집행유예를 선고받은 바바라 그레이햄(Barbara Graham: 수잔 헤이워드 분)이 캘리포니아 모나헨 살인사건의 용의자로 기소가 된다. 바바라는 사회에 대한 불신감과 본인의 과거에 대한 증오로 심문 도중 불손한 행동을 취한다. 이에 검찰측은 모나헨 살인 사건의 진상을 밝히면 풀어주겠다는 제의를 하지만 바바라는 특유의 냉소적인 독설로 그들을 조롱할뿐이다. 이에 검찰측은 과거 그녀의 전과와 윤락 행위를 했었다는 전력을 가지고 그녀를 살인범으로 만들어 버린다. 사건 당일 남편(Henry Graham: 웨슬리 로 분)과 함께 있었다는 진술에 대한 증인을 출석시키지 못한 바바라를 살해사건의 진범인 킹(Bruce King: 제임스 필브룩 분), 산토(Jack Santo: 루 크루그먼 분), 퍼킨스(Emmett Perkins: 필립 쿨리지 분)와 같이 있었다고 거짓증언을 시키는데 성공한 검찰측은 법정에서의 완벽한 증거를 조작 죄를 뒤집어 쒸운다. 결국 사형을 선고받은 바바라는 샌프란시스코 여자 교도소로 이감이 되고 곧 산퀸틴의 가스실에서 사형집행을 명받게 된다. 밖에서는 바바라의 친지들과 변호사가 대법원에 탄원서를 넣으나 기각당하고 6월 3일로 집행일이 결정이 난다. 그래도 포기하지 않고 사형집행 절차가 행해지는 순간에도 법정에서는 논란이 계속되지만 결국 바바라는 가스실에서 32세의 나이에 한 많은 목숨을 몰수당한다.
