Cruz is a grandma who's spent years, decades actually, without having an orgasm. 1937년 쿠데타를 잃으킨 정부와 자유를 수호하려는 민병대 간에 내전이 한창이었다. 열강들은 스페인 내전의 이권에 개입하기 시작했다. 독일과 이탈리아는 쿠데타 정부를, 소련은 민병대 측을 지원하기 시작하면서 전쟁은 걷잡을 수 없이 번지기 시작한다. 그리고 전쟁은 갈수록 막바지에 이르렀고, 양측은 스페인 북부의 작은 도시 게르니카를 두고 마지막 일전을 준비하게 된다. 한때 잘 나갔던 뉴욕 헤럴드 트리뷴지의 헨리(제임스 다시) 역시 스페인의 기사거리를 노리고 빌바오 지방으로 들어오게 된다. 하지만 헨리의 명성은 이제, 허명이 되어 버렸고 가짜 기사로 근근이 연명하는 신세였다. 그러던 중 헨리는 빌바오의 민병대 측 언론실에서 테레사(마리아 발베르드)라는 여인을 만나게 된다. 대학에서 헨리의 기사들을 공부했다는 그녀는 변해버린 그의 논점에 비판을 가했고, 헨리는 그녀와의 만남을 통해서 점점 전쟁의 진실에 관해 바라보게 되는데...
