재정적으로 파산 상태에 이른 와인 판매상 알렉스는 아내 수잔과의 불화와 겉돌기만 하는 양아들 제이슨 때문에 집에서는 마음이 떠나 있다. 알렉스는 결국 금고털이범이자 친구인 빅터와 와인을 납품하던 리스 저택의 금고를 털기 위해 치밀한 계획을 세운다. 그 집에서 보모로 일하고 있는 정부 가브리엘의 도움으로 목걸이를 훔치는 데 성공한 알렉스와 빅터. 그러나 여행 가방을 꾸리다가 수잔으로부터 추궁당한 알렉스는 아내와 싸우다가 쓰러지게 된다. 남편이 죽었다고 생각한 수잔은 알렉스의 여행 가방을 들고 제이슨과 무작정 집을 나선다.
