사립탐정 '필립 말로우'는 사건 의뢰인이 없어 형편이 궁색하지만 뉴욕 양키스 '조 디마지오'의 열렬 팬이다. 그러던 중 널티 반장이 찾아오는데 그는 필립 사무실에 올 때 암호로 자신을 알린다.‘백설공주야' 그러면 필립은 널티 반장에게 이런 답을 보낸다. ‘난쟁이들도 따라왔소?' 부하 형사들을 대동했는지에 대한 질문이다. 필립에게 거구 '무스 말로이'로부터 행방이 묘연한 여인 '벨마'를 찾아 달라는 의뢰가 들어온다. 거구 무스는 감옥에서 7년 만에 출소를 했는데 애인 벨마는 밤무대 가수로 활동한 전력이 있다고 한다. 필립은 흑인 구역 술집에서 벨마의 행방을 찾지만 아무도 모른다고 해서, 전 여가수 '제시 플로리안'의 집을 찾아가지만 그녀 역시 모른 척했고 그녀의 이웃 '토미'는 벨마가 아닌 가짜 사진을 보여준다. 사건은 미궁으로 빠지고 필립이 벨마의 행방을 찾아 나설수록 묘한 살인사건에 점점 휘말리게 되는데...

미용사가 적성에 꼭맞는 죠지(워렌 비티 분)는 여자를 좋아하고,여자들도 그를 따르기때문에 언제나 여자에 둘러쌓여 있따. 그는 질(골디 혼 분)과 살고 있지만 한편으로 펠리샤와 사귀고 있다. 죠지는 자신의 미용실을 내기 위해 대출을 받으려고 펠리샤의 남편 레스터를 만나는데 레스터의 애인인 재키는 공교롭게도 죠지의 옛날 애인이다. 그날밤 한 파티에 얽히고 설킨 레스터, 펠리샤, 재키, 죠지, 질이 모두 같이 참석하는 데 죠지와 재키는 옛정을 돌이키다 들키고 만다. 죠지는 질이 떠나가자 재키에게 매달리지만 재키는 레스터와 떠나고 죠지만이 홀로 남게 된다.
