어두운 밤, 쿄나의 가족은 침략자들을 피해 급히 피난길에 오른다. 가족은 곧 흩어져 버리고, 쿄나는 남동생 아드리엘과 안전한 땅을 찾아 이동한다. 남매는 부랑아들의 소굴, 강압적인 양부모의 저택, 의문의 노파가 사는 산 속 오두막, 서커스단 등을 전전하며 여러 사람을 만나고 다양한 위험을 극복한다.
