미국에서 학교를 졸업한 청년 반은 베트남계 미국인 남자 친구 이안과 함께 베트남의 고향 집으로 돌아온다. 엄마는 아들의 방문에 마냥 기쁘지만, ‘친구′라고 소개받은 이안과는 다소 어색하다. 살짝 치매가 온 할머니는 손자를 알아보지 못하고 손자의 남자 친구를 손자라고 철석같이 믿는다. 반은 이런 할머니가 섭섭할 듯도 하지만, 이안이 싹싹하게 할머니를 대하는 모습에 흐뭇하다. 하지만 어머니를 비롯한 주변 사람들의 결혼과 애를 낳으라는 압박에 영 마음이 편치만은 않다. 이안 역시 반이 가족에게 커밍아웃하지 않는 모습에 점점 불편함을 느끼고, 결국 할머니에게 두 사람의 관계를 고백한다. 그런 와중에 반은 어머니가 숨겨왔던 어려움과 수면 아래에 있던 가족 간의 갈등을 마주하게 된다.
