1127년 페르시아. 자신을 깨운 왕을 부축여 세 가지 소원을 들어주게 될 찰라, 진(The Djinn/Nathaniel Demerest: 앤드류 디보프 분)의 정체와 곧 맞게 될 무서운 비밀을 알고있는 마법사의 주문으로 오팔 보석에 영원히 갇히고 만다. 시간은 흘러 현재의 미국. 신상을 주로 사모으는 수집상 래이몬드 버몬트(Raymond Beaumont: 로버트 잉글런드 분)의 '아후라 마즈다'상을 운반하던 기중기 기사는 술을 마신 탓에 실수로 상을 떨어뜨리고 상은 산산조각이 난다. 그 조각 사이에 보관되어 있던 보석을 발견한 또 다른 일꾼은 그 보석을 몰래 빼내 경매회사에 넘긴다. 회사 직원인 셰논(Shannon Amberson: 웬디 벤슨 분)은 보석감정사인 언니 알렉산드라(Alexandra Amberson: 타미 로렌 분)에게 보석 감정을 부탁한다. 보석을 살펴보던 그녀는 뭔지 모를 불길한 느낌에 휩싸인 채 다시 과학자인 친구 조쉬(Josh Aickman: 토니 크레인 분)에게 보내 정밀한 분석을 의뢰하기에 이른다. 며칠 뒤 조쉬가 스펙트럼 분석을 하던 중 자극을 받은 보석이 네 부분으로 갈라지자 눈을 멀게할 만큼의 밝은 빛을 발산하면서 폭발하고 진이 그 끔찍한 모습을 드러낸다. 800년의 긴 잠에서 깨어난 진은 고통을 멈춰달라는 조쉬의 소원을 들어주고 그를 죽인 후 그의 영혼을 자기가 갇혔던 보석 속에 가둬둔다. 조쉬를 죽인 대가로 인간의 형체에 가까워진 진은 차례로 만난 사람들에게 자신의 추악한 모습을 보여 공포에 떨게 하고 소원을 빌게해 그들의 영혼을 약탈해가는데...
