영국의 저명한 극작가 테렌스 래티건의 희곡 'The Sleeping Prince'를 마릴린 몬로가 직접 각색한 것이다. 영국에서 촬영되었으며, 올리비에와 몬로의 프로덕션이 합작으로 제작했다. 올리비에 - 몬로 사이의 연기 조화가 예상 외로 좋았고, 조연진들이 아주 좋은 호흡을 맞추어주었다. 오랜 무대 역사를 가진 영국의 탄탄한 연기진들의 실력을 볼 수가 있다. 1911년 영국왕 죠지 5세의 대관식에 참석하기 위해서 온 어느 나라의 왕자와 우연히 대사관에 들른 미국인 쇼걸 아가씨와의 사이에서 벌어지는 해프닝과 은근한 로맨스가 펼쳐진다. 상류 사회의 위선을 풍자하고 인간성의 진실은 신분과는 관계가 없다는 메시지를 담고 있어서 그런대로 의미가 있는 작품이기는 하나, 지나치게 이야기를 끄는 듯한 느낌이 주는 영화이다. 비평가들의 평가는 그런대로 좋았으나 흥행에서는 실패했다.
