캘리포니아주 랜쵸 카르네 고등학교내의 치어리더 팀, 샌디에고 토로스는 미국 치어리더 경연대회에서 5년 연속으로 우승한 최강팀이다. 팀의 새 주장(캡틴)으로 뽑힌 토랜스 쉽맨(Torrance Shipman: 커스틴 던스트 분)에게 이제 6년 연속 우승의 기대감이 모아진다. 대회를 몇 주 앞둔 어느날, 토랜스는 자신들이 대회용으로 준비하고 있는 안무가 다른 팀 것을 도용한 것임을 발견하고 극심한 수치심과 혼란에 빠진다. 바로 토로스의 전 팀장이 가난한 동네에 위치한 이스트 캠튼 교의 치어리더 팀 클로버스로부터 도용한 것이다. 이제 토로스는 얼마남지 않은 준비기간동안 새로운 안무를 만들어야 한다. 한편, 아이시스(Isis: 가브리엘 유니언 분)가 이끄는 클로버스 팀은 가난한 팀 사정상 경연대회로 가기 위한 여비를 벌기위하여 여념이 없다. 드디어 결전의 날은 다가오고, 우승은 한 팀만의 것이다. 토로스와 클로버스는 자신들의 최선을 다하여 경기에 임하는데.

Jimmy, a young boy trying to gain acceptance from his peers, is horrified when he sees a circus trainer abusing a bear cub. One of the circus employees tells Jimmy that there is a magic cave in the hills nearby that can transport people to another time, and that maybe he can use it to help the bear. Jimmy does some exploring, finds the cave, and is amazed to find himself transported back to the early 1800's where he encounters Jeremiah, a nature-loving mountain man with a bear friend of his own. Jeremiah agrees to come to the future and help out Jimmy, but the 21st century is quite different from the 19th, and springing the bear cub will not be as easy as Jeremiah thinks. Not in any way related to the "Grizzly Adams" television series.

This time, they are helped on their move to San Diego by trucker Jack Ranson. While Ava settles in, getting a leading part in the school play, Jack starts dating Mary Jo but soon reveals himself to be controlling and aggressive. Mary Jo prepares to flee again, angering Ava.

중학교를 다니는 데이빗 리어리(David Leary: 릭 모라리스 분)는 자신을 때리고 물건을 빼앗는 송곳니란 별명의 로스코 비거(Rosco Bigger: 톰 아놀드 분) 때문에 항상 고민이다. 달에서 가져왔다는 돌을 전시하던 중 도난 사고가 발생하고, 우연히 로스코가 가지고 있는 것을 본 데이빗은 아버지의 전근으로 이사를 가는 날 학교 교장에게 이 사실을 이른다. 시간이 흘러 한 중학교의 작문선생이 된 데이빗은 그곳의 기술선생인 로 스코와 재회하는데, 소극적이고 수동적으로 변해있던 로스코는 데이빗을 다 시 괴롭히기 시작하면서 삶의 활기를 찾는다. 한편, 이 앙숙관계는 자식들대에까지 이어지는데 여기서는 반대로 데이빗 의 아들이 로스코의 아들을 괴롭힌다. 로스코에게 괴롭힘을 당하던 데이빗은 달에서 가져온 돌을 훔친 로스코를 일러바친 사람이 자신임을 얘기하고, 그 도난사건이 들통나면서 소년원에서 3년간 살고, 부모로부터 버림받고 고아원 에서 커야 했던 로스코는 자신의 운명을 데이빗이 망쳤다고 생각, 죽음의 결투를 벌인다.
