비둘기를 파는 소년을 충격적으로 묘사한 오시마 나기사 감독의 첫 데뷔작. 비둘기의 귀소본능을 이용해, 같은 비둘기를 몇번이나 팔고 있는 가난한 소년과 부르조아 소녀의 교우를 통해 현대사회의 밑바탕에 숨겨져 있는 계급적인 단절에 절망한다는 충격적인 내용이다. 특히, 소년이 비둘기를 사살한다는 강렬한 라스트 씬과 영화작가의 탄식이 스크린 곳곳에서 신음처럼 들려오는 멋진 작품.
