One unlucky evening, Louis Cropa, a part-time bookmaker, discovers that his restaurant has become a hotbed of conflicting characters. In addition to having to please a whiny food critic, Louis must fend off a hostile takeover from a pair of gangsters, to whom his sous-chef is in debt. Further, Louis has an argument with his son, the star chef, whose culinary creativity has brought success to the business.

야망에 찬 신세대의 표본 그래함 크라카우키(Graham Krakowski: 빌 팩스톤 분)는 빠른 승진 덕에 꿈에 그리던 '마이홈'까지 장만한 미국산 오렌지. 그러나 감격할 사이도 없이 나타난 거리의 불자 덕분에 그의 인생까지 사정없이 곤두박질 친다. 흉칙한 몰골에 노골적 밝힘증까지 있는 이 뻔돌이는 평소 자신이 애용(?)하던 집을 돈주고 샀다고 해서 소유권까지 주장하는 그래함을 인정할 수 없다는 희한한 장난과 협박으로 그를 괴롭힌다. 하찮은 부랑자 때문에 온전한 생활을 못하는 것두 억울한판에 놈의 술수로 과대망상적 성격 파탄자로 몰린 그래함은 결국 사랑하는 애인, 직장, 친구들까지 잃고 만다. 설상가상으로 이 도시에 난데없는 연쇄살인 사건의 회오리가 몰아치면서 그는 더이상 망가질래야 망가질 수도 없을 만큼 처참한 신세가 되는데.
