대정전이 있던 다음 날, 평소와 다름없이 아침 출근길에 나선 TV 리포터 루크(헤이든 크리스텐슨)는 거리 곳곳에 허물처럼 벗겨진 옷가지, 주인 없이 나뒹굴고 있는 자동차들까지, 도시 전체의 인적이 흔적도 없이 사라져버린 것을 발견한다. 급히 방송국에 간 루크는 어둠이 덮쳐 사람들을 순식간에 사라지게 하는 충격적인 영상을 보게 되고 그에게 다가오는 정체불명의 어둠을 피해 도망치기 시작하는데….
