레티는 쉴 새 없이 부는 바람을 뚫고 사촌이 사는 텍사스로 간다. 기차에서 만난 로디는 바람은 여자를 미치게 만든다며 레티를 겁주면서도 그녀를 유혹한다. 도착 후, 로디는 레티에게 다시 만날 것을 약속하며 떠나고, 레티는 마중 나온 사촌의 이웃 리게와 목장으로 향한다. 모두들 레티를 반기지만, 사촌의 아내 코라만은 레티를 탐탁잖게 여기고, 레티를 쫓아내려 한다.
스웨덴 출신으로 무성 영화 시대 최고의 감독 중 한 명인 빅토르 셰스트룀과 완벽히 절제된 연기로 무성 영화 시대의 여신이라 불리는 릴리안 기쉬가 함께 작업하였으며, 두 사람의 마지막 무성영화이자 쇠스트롬의 대표작이다.

Sheriff Pat Halahan comes into an inheritance and travels to San Francisco to collect. Faith O’Day, a cat burglar armed with pistol and flashlight breaks into his hotel room and demands that Halahan cough up his dough. Halahan sees her threat and raises her a one-dollar bet that he can return a brooch she stole earlier the same evening before its loss is discovered. Pulling off his boots to slip on his own “soft shoes,” Halahan sets off to do a little second-story work, not realizing the trouble he’s in for.

A railroad engineer adopts a French orphan while he's fighting in the army in World War I, and takes him back to the US when the war ends. Later the boy needs an eye operation that the engineer can't afford, so he takes the rap for a murder he didn't commit in order to get his son the operation.

A bandit known as The Black Mask is terrorizing the countryside around the California border town of Caliboro. When word spreads that the Mask's gang is going to hit town, the town priest turns over the church's money to the local sheriff for safekeeping.
