1836년 여름 조르쥬 상드(George Sand: 주디 데이비스 분)는 유명세와 동시에 악평의 정점에 올라 있었다. 당시 가장 인기 있는 다작의 작가라는 명성과는 별도로 작품에서나 생활에서 자신세대의 여권 대변자로 유명했다. 남작 두드방과의 불행했던 결혼생활을 청산하면서, 이색적으로 자신의 두 아이 모리승와 솔랑쥐를 자신이 양육하기로 했다. 그녀는 가족들과 노양의 집이나 빠리의 문학살롱에서 시간을 보내거나, 또는 무성한 소문대로 애인 중의 한명과 지내기도 했다. 요사이 그녀는 그들중 두사람을 피하느라 고심중이니, 자식들의 선생님인 말피(Felicien Mallefille: 죠지스 코라페이스 분)와 시인 알프레드 드 뮤쎄(Alfred De Musset: 맨디 파틴킨 분)이다. 어느날 상드는 프란츠 리스트(Franz Liszt: 줄리안 샌즈 분)의 집을 방문했는데, 때마침 와있던 폴란드 태생의 작곡가 쇼팽(Frederic Chopin: 휴 그랜트 분)의 음악에 완전히 사로 잡혀 버렸다. 계속 그를 보기는 하지만 그의 연주를 들을 수 있는 기회가 좀처럼 생기지 않자, 즉흥적으로 자신을 포함하여 예술가인 유진 드라크로(Eugene Delacroix: 랄프 브라운 분)와, 리스트 부부와 함께 쇼팽을 당땅 공작(Duke D'Antan: 안톤 로저스 분)의 농원으로 초대하는데...

When Catherine is caught with her illicit lover by her father-in-law Paul, the concerned father leaves to tell his son Thomas about the incident. Paul is injured in an auto accident and returns home in a wheelchair unable to speak. Catherine's guilt weighs heavily on her as she hopes to never let Thomas know she was unfaithful. She panics and seeks a way to eliminate Paul in this psychological thriller.

은행강도계에서 알아주던 루카는 5년형을 마치고 나오면서 이제야 말로 새로운 마음으로 살 것을 다짐한다. 그리고 시민으로서 단순히 통장을 만들기 위해 은행에 간다. 그런데 갑자기 서툰 은행강도짓을 해보려는 삐뇽이 은행에 뛰어들어온다. 경찰이 은행을 포위하자 당황한 삐뇽은 떨리는 총구를 루카에게 들이대며 밖으로 나간다. 루카가 인질임을 믿지 않는 경찰은 그가 다시 은행털이를 시작한 줄로만 알고 총격을 가한다. 간신히 도망친 루카는 삐뇽의 친구에게서 치료를 받는다. 삐뇽이 엄마를 잃고 실어증에 걸린 딸 잔느 때문에 은행강도를 시도했다는 것을 알고 어쩔 수 없이 두 사람과 도망자가 된 루까. 단순범이고 초범인 삐농은 사고 연발이고 할 수 없이 루까는 두 부녀를 돌봐주게 된다.
