‘산타 미라’ 유물 연구소의 수석연구원으로 근무하는 ‘이스라 웰렌’ 교수 앞으로 어느 날, 아일랜드에서 상자 하나가 배달된다. 상자 속에는 아일랜드 템플 기사단의 문양이 찍혀있는 갑옷 장갑이 유물 연구소 내부의 한 지점이 표시된 지도와 함께 들어있었다. 이를 확인한 ‘웰렌’ 교수는 자신의 제자들과 함께 지도에 표시된 지점을 찾기 시작하고 그 곳에서 오래된 철제 상자 하나를 발견하게 된다. 그 곳에도 역시 아일랜드 템플 기사단의 문양이 있음을 발견한 이들은 묘한 긴장감을 느끼게 된다. 봉인된 철제 상자를 개봉하자 기괴한 형태의 머리가 미이라 상태로 들어 있음을 보고 모두 크게 놀란다. 인간도 짐승도 아닌 이 기괴한 형태의 머리는 이내 귀를 찢는 듯한 비명소리를 만들어 내고, 그 곳에 있던 사람들 모두는 그 충격적인 비명소리에 고막이 찢어지는 고통을 느끼게 된다. 그 후 거짓말처럼 사라져 버린 미이라... ‘웰렌’ 교수는 정확한 사실 확인을 하기 전까지는 학장에게 보고하지 않기로 하고 제자들에게도 이 사실을 비밀로 하도록 지시한다. 그러나 그 자리에 있었던 사람들에게 환청과 환상들이 계속 이어지자 제자들은 이 사실을 더 이상 비밀로 해서는 안될 것 같다고 생각하는데...
