의대 학생인 미아 휴(미쉘 앙)과 다큐멘터리 제작자인 그녀의 친구들은 알츠하이머 환자인 데보라 로건(질 라슨)과 그녀의 딸 사라(앤 램세이)의 이야기를 다큐멘터리로 제작하기 위해 데보라 로건의 집으로 향한다. 데보라는 촬영을 거부하지만 돈이 필요하다는 딸 사라의 설득으로 촬영이 시작된다. 촬영이 계속되면서 데보라의 알츠하이머 증상은 악화된다. 갑자기 포악해지는 것은 물론, 그녀가 배운 적 없는 언어로 얘기를 하기에 이른다. 시간이 흐를수록 그녀의 기괴한 행동은 심해지고, 그녀는 알츠하이머가 아닌 몇 해전 죽은 살인마의 영혼에 의해 조종당하고 있음이 밝혀지는데……
