테러리스트들이 파리의 에펠탑을 점거하고 관광객을 인질로 하여 프랑스 정부에게 자기들의 요구를 들어주지 않으면 수소폭탄을 터뜨리겠다고 위협하는 사건이 발생한다. 데일리 플래닛 신문사의 유능한 기자 로이스(Lois Lane: 마곳 키더 분)는 이미 현장에서 취재를 하는데, 뒤늦게 그 사실을 알게 된 슈퍼맨(Superman/Clark Kent: 크리스토퍼 리브 분)이 날아가서 엘리베이트 밑에 묶여 떨어지는 루이스를 구하고, 수소폭탄을 지구 밖으로 날려보낸다. 이때 수소폭탄은 클립튼 행성이 폭발하기 전 슈퍼맨의 아버지 칼 알과 몇몇 판관들이 재판하여 '팬텀 존'에 가둬버린 악당 조드 사령관(General Zod: 테렌스 스탬프 분) 일당을 자유롭게 만드는 우주의 폭발을 일으킨다. 자유의 몸이 된 세 악당은 달을 탐사 중인 지구인 우주비행사를 죽이고 지구로 찾아오는데, 그들은 슈퍼맨과 맞먹는 괴력을 갖고 온갖 나쁜 짓을 한다. 한편 신혼 부부에게서 폭리를 취하는 나이아가라 폭포 주변의 호텔을 취재하기 위해, 클락과 로이스는 신혼 부부로 가장을 하고 잠입하는데, 폭포를 구경하던 한 남자 아이가 장난을 치다가 떨어지자 슈퍼맨이 나타나서 구해준다. 그 순간 클락이 없었다는 사실에 로이스는 그가 슈퍼맨이라고 확신하게 되고, 호텔에서 모닥불 위에 넘어져도 손을 덴 흔적이 없자, 클락의 정체는 드러나고 만다. 슈퍼맨은 로이스를 자신의 얼음 요새로 데려가서 모든 사실을 알려주고 두 사람의 사랑을 위해서 슈퍼맨의 능력을 버리고 인간이 되는 길을 택하는데.

크립톤 행성의 조엘(Jor-El: 마론 브란도 분)은 행성이 곧 폭발할 것이라는 사실을 알고, 수많은 은하계의 지식을 담은 푸른 수정과 함께 아들인 카렐(Baby Clark Kent: 아론 스모린스키 분)을 지구로 보낸다. 카렐이 타고 온 작은 우주선은 조나단 부부(Jonathan Kent: 글렌 포드 분 / Ma Kent: 필리스 색터 분) 앞에 떨어지고, 아이가 없던 그들이 카렐을 데려와 클락이라 부르며 키운다. 어느 덧 청년으로 성장한 클락(Clark Kent/Superman: 크리스토퍼 리브 분)은 알지못하는 힘에 끌려 북쪽으로 가게 되고, 그 곳에서 아버지 조엘로부터 그 동안의 궁금증을 풀고, 다시 지구로 돌아오게 된다. 지구로 돌아온 클락은 데일리 플리닛지의 기자로 살아가며, 위험한 순간마다 슈퍼맨으로 변신해 사람들을 구해낸다. 슈퍼맨의 활약이 커지면서 신문사마다 다투어 그의 기사를 실었고 클락은 같은 신문사의 여기자 로이스 레인(Lois Lane: 마곳 키더 분)을 짝사랑하게 되는데.

열 다섯 살의 바비(제니 아구터 분), 열 두 살의 필리스(샐리 톰셋 분), 열 살의 피터(게리 워렌 분)는 런던 교외에서 자상한 엄마(디나 셰리단 분), 아빠와 부족한 것 없이 행복하게 살던 아이들이다. 그러던 어느 날 험상궂게 생긴 두 남자가 집으로 찾아와 아버지를 끌고 간 후, 세 아이들과 엄마는 요크셔의 기차길 옆에 있는 작은 집으로 이사를 가게 된다. 이전보다는 어려워진 생활이지만 아이들은 구김살 없이 새로운 환경에 적응한다. 이들은 매일 아침 기차가 지나갈 때 손을 흔들며 인사를 하는 것이 일상이 되는데 이런 행동을 통해 기차역의 하급 직원인 퍼크스(버나드 크리빈스 분)와 1등칸을 타고 여행하는 노신사(윌리엄 머빈 분)를 알게 된다. 또한 아이들은 불쌍한 사람을 도와주는 따뜻한 마음도 가지고 있었다. 영국에 있는 가족들을 찾아 러시아에서 망명한 사람을 도와주는가 하면 산사태로 기차가 큰 사고를 낼 수 있음을 알고는 위험을 무릅쓰고 사고를 막는 일을 해내기도 한다. 하지만 일 때문에 멀리 떠난 줄로만 알고 있던 아버지가 실은 스파이 누명을 쓰고 사형 선고를 받은 채 수감돼 있다는 사실을 알게 된 아이들은 침울한 날들을 보낸다. 그러나 주위 사람들의 도움으로 아버지의 누명은 벗겨지고 다시 온 가족이 모여 행복한 생활을 하게 된다.
