Teresa is suffering from postnatal depression after the birth of her son. In an effort to find comfort elsewhere she temporarily moves back with her husband to her parents’ house. However, the young woman’s family home conjures up memories of a previous relationship and a past love that perhaps has yet to be extinguished.

Based on a script by Andrzej Żuławski, this is a fascinating on-screen dialogue between father and son that combines nostalgia and fury, the sublime with humor, and old-school style with a sharp, penetrating look at Polish reality. The eponymous bird talk is the language used by those excluded from the aggressive majority: a history teacher tormented by children, a teacher of Polish studies fired from his job, a girl who cleans a banker’s villa, a florist with a club foot and a student with a fascination for cinema. Pushed to the margins by the extreme right, they defend themselves with irony, songs and quotes from the classics.

On Friday evening, Janek has a meeting with his friend Bartek and his fiancée Justyna. Realizes that their relationship is in bad shape. He once had an affair with Justyna and sees a chance for himself when he is invited to a house party by them. Little did he know that he would be subjected to the final test that night.

An attempt at depicting the life of a generation born and raised in communist Poland; a generation that lived through all the stages of that system and made it to democracy. Throughout his life, the film's protagonist has always tried to be active, but something always got in his way, either through an absurd coincidence, as a result of his own lack of ability, or due to the unpredictable nature of certain events in our recent history.

1944년 여름 독일 나치 치하의 폴란드 바르샤바. 공장에서 일하며 어머니와 어린 남동생을 부양하는 스테판(요제프 파블로프스키)은 나치로부터 매일 모욕을 당한다. 이에 반나치 저항군에 가담하고 싶지만 위험한 일에 연류되지 말라는 어머니의 부탁으로 갈등하다 결국 친구들과 함께 비밀스러운 봉기 작전에 돌입하고 그 곳에서 알라(소피아 비츨라츠)를 만나 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 1944년 8월 1일, 폴란드 저항군의 반격이 시작되자 스테판은 어머니와의 약속을 저버리고 친구들과 전투에 가담한다. 나치군들이 자신의 집 주변을 점령했다는 소식을 듣고 급히 집으로 향한 스테판은 독일군에 의해 어머니와 어린 남동생이 무자비하게 사살되는 장면을 목격하게 되는데..

알 수 없는 어린 소녀의 홈 비디오 장면이 흘러나온다. 주인공 마르친은 지난 시절을 회상하듯 여기저기를 배회하다가 무언가 결심에 찬 표정을 짓는다. 그가 처음으로 향한 곳은 누군가의 집. 집 앞에서 올라를 처음 만나게 되고 마르친은 그의 아버지를 만나기 위해 왔지만 집에는 없다는 걸 확인한다. 급하게 집을 나서는 올라를 쫒아가는 마르친. 올라는 클럽에서 남자를 만나고 있었고 마르친은 그 남자에게 다시는 그녀를 만나지 말라고 협박한다. 마르친과 올라는 다른 파티장소로 자리를 옮기고 둘은 급격히 친해서 올라의 집에서 하룻밤을 보내게 된다. 다음날 아침 그녀의 부모님들이 친절하게 대해주고 마르친은 그녀의 아버지에게 차를 태워달라고 부탁한 후 한적한 곳에서 그를 살해한다. 다음날 다시 올라의 집에 찾아간 마르친은 올라의 어머니가 은근히 자신을 유혹하는 걸 느끼고 그녀 또한 마찬가지로 한적한 곳으로 데려가 죽이고 만다. 마르친은 올라의 연락을 무시하고 올라는 방황한다. 둘은 다시 만나 화해를 하게 되는데...
