When Vlada Koza, a mature Ukrainian woman, intrusive and caring, becomes a grandmother for the first time, she drops everything and travels to Sicily from her home in the Carpathian mountains to join her daughter... without warning! 폴란드 동쪽 국경지대의 볼히니아 지역은 우크라이나인, 폴란드인, 유대인들이 예로부터 섞여 살던 곳이다. 이곳의 폴란드계 아가씨 조피아는 언니 헬라가 우크라이나인 남편과 행복하게 결혼식을 올리는 것을 보며, 자신도 사랑하는 남자친구 페트로와 결혼할 것을 약속한다. 하지만 곧 폴란드는 세계 2차 대전의 화마에 휩싸이는데... 볼히니아 지역에서는 전통적으로 폴란드인 지주층과 우크라이나 소작농의 구조를 가졌고 이로 인한 갈등의 씨앗을 내포하고 있었다. 전쟁이 발발하자 우크라이나 계 주민들은 내심 독일군이 와서 폴란드를 몰아내고, 우크라이나 독립 국가를 건설해주길 바라고 있다. 독일군이 볼히니아를 점령하자 이곳의 유대인들은 학살당하고, 몇 년 후 독일군이 물러서자 이번엔 독일군 편에 섰던 우크라이나인들은 몇 년 전까지 이웃주민으로, 소꿉친구로 지냈던 폴란드계 주민들에게 끔찍한 학살을 자행한다. 20세기 민족주의가 가져온 극단적인 폭력성과 잔혹성을 한 폴란드 여인의 시선으로 보여준 작품이다.
A little girl, who is a poet and whose daddy calls her a boy's name, Mykola, tells three stories that happened in her village – about the football match, the wedding, and the strange testament. Mykola knows everything, because of what her grandpa told her: it's not good to lie; a guy has to be led over the water so that he was forever faithful; a movie in the sky is more interesting than a movie in the cinema; and a human life is like the flight of a golden fly over the fire – similarly bright and similarly short.
