To achieve his dream of being a trumpet player, a man leaves his hometown and works in a touring operetta troupe. He falls in love with a girl but then contracts tuberculosis, forcing him to give up the trumpet.

In 1949, the Communists take over mainland. The refugees and the military arrive in the Keelung Harbor in Taiwan. While the father holds secret meetings with other generals in attempt to recover the lost land, the kids still play games with their grandma who still enjoys the harmony and peace in hardship. Gradually, it seems that there was no hope to fight back the fatherland. The general turned father has to run a small business to support the family. He encounters a series of struggles. And finally his kids grow up.

눈오는 서울, 윤희에게 대만에서 이상한 전화가 날아든다. 빨리 남편을 데려가라는 것이다. 대만지사에 근무하던 남편 영민이 행방을 감춘 때라 윤희는 불안해진다. 영민에겐 월남 복무 시절 결혼을 약속한 레뚜이가 있었다. 사이공의 패망과 함께 두사람은 연락이 두절되었고 레뚜이가죽었다고 생각한 영민은 결혼을 하였는데 7년 후 우연히 대북에서 레뚜이를 만난 것이다. 처음 윤희는 분노와 갈등속에 방황하나 막상 레뚜이를 만나보니, 레뚜이는 영민을 찾아 서울까지 왔으나, 영민과 윤희가 결혼하는 것을 알고 차마 그들의 행복을 깨뜨릴수 없었다는 사실을 알게되자 윤희는 자신이 양보할 것을 결심한다. 그러나 레뚜이는 진실로 인간적인 윤희의 양보앞에서 하얀 아오자이로 단장하고 천국에 있을 조국을 향해 자살하고 만다.

A touching story about a strong-willed woman who endures much pain and suffering in caring for her feeble husband and new born child. Her gallant efforts are not only shunned upon by her husband, they are left unappreciated.

'샌드위치 맨'은 생계를 꾸려가기 위해 피에로 분장을 하고 몸 앞뒤에 포스터가 붙은 판자를 둘러메고 극장 홍보를 하는 한 가장과 그 가족의 이야기이다. 주인공에겐 아내와 어린 아기가 있으며, 일이 끝난 후에도 피에로 분장을 거의 지우지 않고 생활을 한다. 그런 어느날 극장 주인은 피에로 일을 그만 두는 대신 삼륜차를 타고 홍보 활동을 하라고 주인공에게 시키게 된다. 피에로 분장을 지우고 아내와 아기 앞에 선 남편. 그러나 아기는 아빠를 알아보지 못하고 낯선 사람인 양 울음을 터뜨린다. 아기가 자신을 알아보지 못한다는 사실을 안 주인공은 조용히 다시 피에로 분장을 하며, 이유를 묻는 아내에게 주인공은 환히 웃으며 '난 내 아들의 인형이잖아.'라고 말하면서 영화는 끝난다.

Two sisters are part of a cabaret act that is rapidly declining in attendance, and although the older sisteris constantly trying to push her younger sister to the forefront in a solo act, the younger sibling is less than enthusiastic. She sees little future in show business, whether in the chorus line or up front -- and so when her older sister finally pulls off a deal for the two to go to Taipei and possibly make some "real money," the younger sister must say yes or no, and either way, one of the two will not be happy.

A detective writer and his girlfriend are involved in a mysterious case when he watches at his neighbor's house.
