30 Sound Situations
Director
30 Sound Situations is a performance which maps the acoustic properties of numerous divergent environments. In each situation, the artist stands in front of the camera (at various distances) and claps two pieces of wood against one another with sweeping gestures. The resulting sounds relate directly to the presented spaces, including: classroom, library, staircase, woodshop, backyard, and park, among others. Waśko taps into various sound effects in order to examine the potential for creating a new representation of space in film.

The artist, emphasizing the objective dimension of the film camera, draws attention to the opposition between the space of the frame (what is presented) and the space outside the frame (what is excluded from the frame, i.e. the continuum of reality). According to Katherine Russel, such a strategy “emphasizes the subordination of reality to form. The picture frame, which has its own autonomy, limits the "view" to a simple economy: inside / outside. The nature of the "interior" is determined by the composition and detail, "outside" there is an unknown space that is never fully described. The fixed frame represents the intentionality of phenomenological consciousness, but at the same time it defines the limits of what is visible and knowable. The static frame indicates the subject of perception. The four sides of the frame also direct our attention to what is beyond it, that is: a continuum of reality defined by a kind of anti-continuum of the frame ”.

For seven minutes Waśko filmed the wall of the Film School in Łódź; he then cut up the film stock, mixed up the fragments and edited them together randomly. In effect, the only stable element of the film is the flat, unchanging wall. Because of the editing method, what is happening in front of the wall (people walking, electric carts passing by) can never be finally established. The artist thus prevents the illusion of three dimensions from materializing. He draws attention to the flat wall, which in turn recalls the flatness of the film stock. Therefore, like The Straight Curve, Wall features an attempt at reducing the 3D illusion of the film to two-dimensionality, more adequate to its physical properties.
