The film tells about Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. October 17, 1896. On the facade of the Alexandrinsky Theater — a poster about the premiere of "The Seagull". A few hours are left before the performance. Chekhov and his sister Masha are expecting Lika Mizinova from Moscow station to arrive from Moscow. Chekhov is alarmed by the upcoming premiere, excited by the meeting with love, which never took place. Memories of acquaintance with Lika, of the experiences caused by the rude scolding of newspaper men who predicted the young writer the inglorious "death under the fence", about the unexpected decision for everyone to go to Sakhalin...

Bezhin Lug (Bezhin Meadow) was to be a Soviet film about a young farm boy whose father attempts to betray the government for political reasons by sabotaging the year's harvest, and the son's efforts to stop his own father to protect the Soviet state, culminating in the boy's murder and a social uprising. Assigned to Soviet film-maker Sergei Eisenstein, the filming followed the same path as with his previous effort, "Que Viva Mexico", into cost overrun and over-shooting of footage. Furthermore, Eisenstein's usage of forbidden experimental film techniques outraged his government superiors, who ordered the film destroyed before it was even completed. All that survives are the first and last frames of each shot, preserved by Sergei Eisenstein’s wife, Pera Atasheva. The 1967 reconstruction, by Naum Kleiman of the Eisenstein Museum and Sergei Yutkevich of Gosfilmofond, places these frames in order, approximating the original film.

16세기 후반 여러 명의 공후들이 러시아 땅을 나누어 통치하고 있었다. 그 중에서 모스크바의 대공이었던 이반 4세는 자신이 분열된 영토를 이민족의 침입으로부터 보호하고 통일시키겠다는 야심에 찬 계획을 갖고 전 러시아의 황제로 취임한다. 귀족 출신의 아내 아나스타시야를 황후로 맞이한 이반은 취임 직후부터 경쟁 관계에 있는 귀족들의 반발에 부딪친다. 모스크바 시내 곳곳에 방화 사건이 발생하고 민심이 흉흉해진다. 한편 카잔 지방에 본거지를 둔 몽고의 칸은 모스크바가 자신들에게 복종할 것을 요구하고 전쟁을 벌인다. 이반 대제가 이끄는 러시아군은 이 전쟁에서 승리한다. 그러나 전쟁에서 승리한 후 모스크바로 귀환하는 도중 이반은 병에 걸려 중태에 빠지게 된다. 이반의 권력이 약화되기만을 기다리고 있던 귀족들은 이 기회를 이용하여 블라디미르 대공을 황제로 앉히려는 음모를 꾸미는데...

Based on the play of the same name by Georgi Mdivani. In September 1941, lieutenant Ilya Streltsov, who graduated from the flight school, was assigned to the fighter aviation regiment guarding the sky of Moscow. He meets in part the nurse Zoya, with whom he grew up in the same yard and with whom he has long been in love. During the first training flight on the "Seagull", lieutenant Streltsov shot down a German plane and received the nickname "Lucky." Streltsov is jealous of the squadron commander to nurse Zoya, believes that he is finding fault with him. For a whole month he is not allowed to fly sorties. In October 1941, lieutenant Streltsov made his first sortie, he shot down one plane and rams the second. For this battle, he is awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Lovely telegraph operator Masha Stepanova is a sanitary nurse. During a training alarm, she meets a taxi driver Alexei (Alyosha) Solovyov. He reads verses to a girl and invites her to the theater. But at the appointed time, Alyosha doesn't come, and Mashenka finds him, helps to recover. Young people fell in love with each other, but Alexei was too frivolous, and brings the girl a lot of sorrows and insults. Because of Alexei’s hobby for another girl, Masha breaks up with him. But she will be able to convey her faithful and true-hearted feeling through years of separation and the hardships of wartime, and when they meet again at the front of the Finnish War, Solovyov realizes what a gift of fate was meeting him with this girl.

A schoolboy, Karo, gets involved into the struggle between Communists and Dashnaks during the establishment of a Soviet regime in Armenia.
