Saddam's Iraq
Director
Filmed just before the First Gulf War, it depicts a prosperous and sophisticated society in which every aspect of life is coloured by 'love' for the 'Great Leader'. Darkly ironic, this film captures the surreal and Orwellian nature of life under Saddam Hussein. In a country which today has lost even its most basic services, the testimony of this vanquished middle-class and the prosperity of their society resonates on many levels.
Afgan: The Soviet Experience
Director
During the 1980s, Russia fought a disastrous war in Afghanistan. Shot by a Western crew, the 40 minute film includes footage of combat missions with the Spetsnaz elite units, helicopter gunship pilots from a Kabul-based Air Assault Unit flying missions, the patrolling of the Salang mountain pass and the military hospital in Kabul. Soviet General Lev Serebrov referred to the making of the film as "An experiment in glasnost".
Warlord of Kayan
Director
This is the story of Sayed Jaffar, a former hippie motorcycle gang member who played the drums in a heavy metal band. Now he returns to Afghanistan to become a key power broker between the Soviets, the Mujahidin and the Afghan government.
Jihad: Afghanistan's Holy War
Director
Filming clandestinely in Kandahar, Harmon and Lindsay have captured stunning images of combat and daily life under Soviet occupation. The result is an extraordinary documentary on Afghanistan's holy war as seen through the eyes of Haji Adbul Latif, the 'Lion of Kandahar' and his Mujahideen. The definitive film on the Soviet-Afghan War.
