지능은 모자라지만 한없이 착한 젤소미나는 차력사 잠파노에게 팔려 조수 노릇을 한다. 잠파노는 가슴을 묶은 쇠사슬을 끊는 묘기를, 젤소미나는 춤을 보여준다. 잠파노는 젤소미나를 학대하지만 그녀는 그런 학대에도 불구하고 잠파노를 좋아한다.
