1941년, 전쟁을 앞둔 유고슬라비아의 봄. 페트로비치 집안의 큰아들인 군인 밀로슈와 작은아들인 의사 스테판은 부모님의 결혼기념일을 맞아 집에 모여 행복한 나날을 보낸다. 국경과 병원으로 떠난 밀로슈와 스테판은 각자의 전쟁을 겪고, 유고슬라비아 군대가 패배하자 밀로슈는 스테판을 찾아와 게릴라의 위장 연락책이 되어 달라고 부탁한다. 스테판은 겉으로는 독일에 협력하는 병원장이지만 뒤로는 형과 게릴라를 돕는다. 작전을 수행하다가 붙잡힌 형제의 아버지와 함께 스테판은 터널을 폭파하며 죽고, 밀로슈는 전쟁의 승리를 위해 마지막 그날까지 싸울 것을 다짐한다.
