사무엘은 편부로 일곱 살 난 딸을 홀로 키운다. 극심한 스트레스에 지치고 무너진 그는 아내와 함께 개조했던 이탈리아 알프스의 샬레(오두막)에 들어가 살기로 한다. 사무엘은 경찰의 이민자 추적을 돕는 이곳 주민들의 분노에 무감하고, 우연히 아프가니스탄에서 도망쳐 온 여성을 맞닥뜨린다. 사무엘은 기껏해야 몇 시간 걸릴 것이라 생각하며 그녀가 국경까지 가는 걸 돕기로 한다. 그러나 위협적인 기세로 이들을 쫓는 한 무리의 사람들이 있다.
