외형은 갱스터 영화이지만, 가혹한 운명으로부터 벗어나지 못하는 한 인간의 비극을 그리고 있는 영화이다. 체(Che)는 동생을 대신해 교도소에서 3년간을 보낸 뒤, 고향인 난팡가오(Nanfangao)로 돌아온다. 하지만, 과거와 달라진 것은 없다. 연인 페이(Pei)는 충격으로 실어증에 걸렸고, 어머니를 버리고 일본으로 갔던 아버지는 다시 난팡가오로 돌아와 토착세력과 영역다툼을 벌인다. 이 벗어날 수 없는 구렁텅이에서 체에게 위안이 되는 것은 어머니에 대한 기억이다. 결국 그는 자신이 지옥과도 같은 이 모든 상황을 정리하기 위해 스스로 악마가 되기로 결심한다.
난팡가오 주변의 섬 주민들은 나비를 악마의 영혼이라고 믿는다. 연약하고 아름다워 보이는 나비에 대한 원주민들의 생각은 첸에게 매우 역설적으로 보인다. 오히려, 나약함과 강인함, 선과 악의 얼굴을 동시에 지닌 첸에게 나비는 어머니의 영혼처럼 느껴진다. 그리고, 원주민들이 주로 모여 사는 난팡가오는 이 암울하고 비극적인 공간으로서의 배경의 역할에 너무나 잘 어울린다. -김지석(수석 프로그래머)
