장차 훌룽한 작가가 되는 것이 꿈인 12살 여자 아이 해리(Harriet: 미쉘 트라치텐버그 분). 꼬마 해리의 가장 친한 친구는 무슨 얘기든 잘 들어주는 다정한 유모 갈리(Ole Golly: 로지 오도롑 분)다. 어느 날 엄마와 아빠가 파리에 간 사이 해리는 갈리와 함께 외출, 영화를 보고 즐거운 시간을 보낸다. 그런데, 해리의 부모는 딸의 밤늦은 외출과 귀가를 이유로 갈리를 해고한다. 외톨이가 된 해리는 좋은 글을 쓰기 위해서는 항상 기록하는 습관을 길러야 한다는 갈리의 조언을 떠올리고 친구들은 물론, 온동네 사람들을 몰래 관찰하고, 하나도 빼놓지 않고 모두 일기장에 기록하면서 보낸다. 그러던 어느 날. 술래잡기 놀이를 하던 중 해리는 그만 일기장을 잃어버리는데, 공교롭게도 그 일기장은 평소 해리와 사이가 좋지 않은 같은 반 아이의 손에 들어가고 만다. 그리고 그 안에 기록된 모든 것들이 낱낱이 공개되는데, 특히 일기장에 기록된 해리와 가장 친한 친구의 단점까지도 공개돼 모든 친구들이 해리를 ‘스파이 해리’라고 놀리면서 멀리하게 된다. 해리의 부모도 해리의 행동이 옳지 않다고 판단하고, 일기장을 빼앗아 버린다. 여기에 선생님까지 가세해 해리가 일기장을 가지고 다니지 못하도록 몸수색을 하는 등 창피를 준다. 이 모든 것을 더 이상 참지 못한 해리는 자신을 괴롭히는 사람들 모두를 하나씩 차례로 혼내주려고 작정하는데.
