소심한 성격으로 혼자만의 강박관념 속에 빠져 사는 윌러드는 정신이 온전치 못한 병든 노모와 함께 다 낡아 쓰러져가는 고성 같은 저택에 살고 있다. 돌아가신 아버지가 세우신 회사마저 동업자에게 빼앗기고, 간신히 종업원으로 생계를 꾸려가지만 악마 같은 사장, 마틴에게 갖은 수모와 모욕을 당하는 윌러드. 회사 동료인 캐서린에게 마음을 두고 있으나 변변한 고백 한 번 하지 못한다.

Author Noel Graham goes to the little village of Mondon, where his ancestors lived, for solitude to write. While searching for a lost puppy, Noel meets Rhona Allerton, who is visiting her guardian, Lewis Moffat, a writer in his declining years. Realizing that he needs inspiration to write a passionate romance, Moffat, with the help of old Benson, a former derelict now in his service, encourages the blossoming love affair between Rhona and Noel, while planning to destroy it later and analyze their suffering.

Tillie and her neighbor Mr. Pipkins are both distraught over their respective marriages. One day, they sneak off to have a lively time at Coney Island. They flee the park together just as their spouses come to find them. After a chase, each is rescued from the ocean and reconcile with their respective spouses.
